Gaillard’s Saint-Joseph Blanc is unusual in that it is made entirely from Roussanne. The grapes are grown on several sites: the cool granite plateau of Malleval at Les Dries, on the slopes of Malleval at Chatres, and Les Vessettes at Chavaney, each cropped at low yield. The wine spent 7 months in Allier and Nevers barrels, only 10% new, with some bâtonnage. Ripe, balanced and energetic with floral and mineral notes which spread out on the palate. It’s an intense, creamy textured wine with gingery spicy, red apple skin and nutty lees notes. A leading light amongst the northern Rhone set, it’s complex and savoury, with some gentle grip on the finish, and it should drink deliciously from day one.
